What do the colors on the Polish flag mean?

The flag of Poland consists of two equal, horizontal and parallel stripes. The top half of the flag is white and the bottom half is red.

The colors refer to the Polish emblem, which shows a white eagle on a red shield. On the flag, white refers to the white eagle and red to the red shield on which it is placed in the emblem.
